Diego Costa Was Chelsea’s Didier Drogba Or Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Former Chelsea defender Ken Monkou believes the Blues’ downfall this season has been partly contributed by Antonio Conte’s decision to offload Diego Costa. The Italian head coach had a bust-up with Costa midway through the previous campaign, and this eventually saw the Spaniard fall out-of-favour at the end of the season.

Costa’s proposed return to Atletico Madrid was constantly pressed thereafter and the Blues finally ended the saga by agreeing to his sale in September 2017. Speaking on the Mail, Monkou suggested that the Blues lost a key figure in the form of Costa, who could be compared to the likes of Drogba and Ibrahimovic – for his presence on the pitch.

Didier Drogba Names Two Players Better Than Lionel Messi

Chelsea favourite Didier Drogba has suggested that Lionel Messi may not be regarded as the greatest player in the world until he can match the achievements of Diego Maradona and Pele at the global stage. The Barcelona forward has won every trophy in the cabinet at club level, but he has not found similar success with the Argentina national side.

Speaking to AFP, Drogba stressed that Messi is a legendary footballer on current terms, but he could enhance his reputation further, if he manages to lead his country to the World Cup like Maradona and Pele, he said: “Messi could stop now and he would already have done a lot for football. To win a World Cup would make him even more legendary. He’s an extraordinary player! He’s still not at the heights of Maradona and Pele, but he’s not far away.” Continue reading “Didier Drogba Names Two Players Better Than Lionel Messi”

Gianfranco Zola dismisses talk of Chelsea backroom role

Chelsea favourite Gianfranco Zola has dismissed the talk of him making a return to Stamford Bridge. The Italian has been recently tipped to take up an assistant job with the Blues looking to recruit Maurizio Sarri as their next head coach in the summer.

In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, Zola clarified that he is on a year’s sabbatical following his dismissal from the managerial role at Birmingham City in April 2017. The 51-year-old added that he has not received any offer from the Blues to rejoin in a coaching capacity. He said: “One week there is and one week there isn’t something linking me with Chelsea. But I know nothing about this hypothesis. Besides, after Birmingham I’ve taken a year out.”

Chelsea can Cope with Hazard Departure, claims Desailly

Chelsea legend Marcel Desailly believes his former side can cope without the services of Eden Hazard in the future just like they did after the departure of fan favourite Didier Drogba. The Belgium international has been heavily tipped to join Real Madrid in the summer with his father having previously revealed that they are waiting on the interest from the European champions.

Speaking to Goal.com, Desailly was unperturbed over the current speculation, and feels the Blues can bring in a suitable replacement for Hazard, if need be in the future, he said: “We are still in the season, no player is more important than the club. Even when Drogba left, one of the great players, the spirit of the club continued. They continued to win. We will be sad if Hazard has to go but I am sure that Roman Abramovich is still passionate about the club. He will bring in another player that can allow the club to be at the same level again.”

Didier Drogba plans to hang up his boots in 2018

Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has revealed that he could call quits on his playing career at the end of the season. The 39-year-old is currently plying his trade for United Soccer League side Phoenix Rising, whom he joined in April of this year.

Drogba has already amassed 10 goals in just 14 outings for the American outfit, and this has taken his overall career total to 296 goals in 677 matches. In an interview with RMC Sport, Drogba was asked about his future where he opened up his plans for retirement next year. He said: “Ah, do you want a scoop? I think next year will be my last season. At some point, you have to stop. I need to have time for my other projects. It’s good to play, but at 39, it holds me back a bit.”

Chelsea trio can emulate Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and John Terry

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin believes his former club are heading in the right direction following their 1-0 triumph over Manchester United on Sunday afternoon. The Blues had come off a gruelling 3-0 defeat at the hands of AS Roma, but they managed to overcome any nervousness to clinch a solid win over Jose Mourinho’s men.

The Premier League holders could have easily doubled their lead on the day, but Antonio Conte will have been pleased with a solid performance against a direct league rival. In the aftermath of the game, Nevin believes the likes of Alvaro Morata, N’Golo Kante and Andreas Christensen could emulate the core reminiscent of the period where Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and John Terry worked together.

Alvaro Morata can emulate Didier Drogba’s efforts – Shaun Wright-Phillips

Former Chelsea forward Shaun Wright-Phillips believes Alvaro Morata has the potential to emulate the showing of Blues favourite Didier Drogba.

The Spain international joined the Blues from Real Madrid during last summer’s transfer window, and he has since scored seven goals in just eight outings for the club.

Speaking exclusively to 888Sport, Wright-Philips was full of praise for Morata, who he feels is doing the right things in his early Chelsea career, he said: “I wouldn’t say that Morata is in Didier’s space now but if he keeps scoring and running in behind and creating chances for others then he’s heading in that direction because he does the same things that Didier did. He runs into channels, he creates chances, and he finishes.”

Earlier in the summer, there were question marks over who could replace Diego Costa efficiently in the Blues’ ranks, and Morata has not disappointed with his consistent showing in the top-flight. The two-time Champions League winner initially started with a series of headed goals for the Blues, but he has since levelled things with a hat-trick against Stoke City using his feet. Serge Aurier thanks Didier Drogba for channelling his career on the right path

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer signing Serge Aurier has thanked Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba for the piece of advice offered last year.

The right-back has had plenty of controversies on and off the field, but he still managed to attain a work permit to secure his Premier League move.

Aurier was never out of controversy during his time at Parc des Princes with former boss Laurent Blanc temporarily suspending the right-back due to foul language used on social media. Last season, he was charged with a criminal offense after he assaulted a police officer outside of a Paris nightclub, who had asked him for a breath test.

Late last year, Drogba told French broadcaster RTL that Aurier needed to become aware of the situation in order to realise what he represents now. Aurier has since taken the advice publicly after admitting that he was in the wrong over his behaviour. LUKAKU STRAYS AWAY FROM THE DROGBA COMPARISON

Manchester United striker RomeluLukaku has rejected the comparison to former Chelsea talisman Didier Drogba.

The Belgian strayed away from comparisons to the former Jose Mourinho star at the Stamford Bridge. Many alluded that the Portuguese manager wanted Lukaku for sharing similar qualities with the Ivorian who helped Mourinho succeed at Chelsea.

“I am different,” Lukalu emphasized.

“Drogba is more of a target man, I am a player that has the ball into feet, who runs in behind. There are physical similarities but we are totally different players,” the former Toffees striker explained.

Lukaku is expected to lead the attack line at Old Trafford while Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial support him. There are reports that the deal for Ivan Perisic could be completed in the following days. The Croatian is believed to be keen on the deal but his employers Inter Milan want him to remain at the Italian capital. Continue reading “LUKAKU STRAYS AWAY FROM THE DROGBA COMPARISON”
