Azpilicueta Names Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard as Idols

Chelsea right Cesar Azpilicueta says that he idolised Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard before he moved to the West London outfit in the summer of 2012.

Azpilicueta has become one of the important players at Chelsea, but few expected to achieve this status after costing only £ 7 million – a fraction of the fee paid to some of the top stars at Chelsea. Azpilicueta moved to the club in the summer of 2012 from Marseille. Since then, he has won every major honour apart from the Champions League. However, he has achieved success on the European stage in the form of the Europa League title.

A number of players coming in from French football were used to seeing the figure of Didier Drogba dominate the headlines. Drogba may be an Ivory Coast star, but he made his name at Marseille before coming to Chelsea for £ 24 million. He remains as one of the greatest players – not just in Chelsea’s history, but also the entire Premier league history.

Drogba’s achievements seem to have certainty revered back in his former club Marseille so much so that Azpilicueta started idolising the striker before coming to West London. Azpilicueta do not get much chance to play with Drogba, as they did so only in the latter’s second spell at the club.

“Very much [Frank] Lampard and [Didier] Drogba. I like the way they played and even more so when I came here and I had the chance to have them in the dressing room,” said Azpilicueta. A highly versatile player, Azpilicueta has been the darling of the manager as a result of being capable of playing across different positions in the back four. At this moment, he is utilised as part of the three centre backs by manager Antonio Conte. He has also played in the right back and left back roles
