WERNER CAN EMULATE DROGBA AT CHELSEA

Under-fire Chelsea attacker Timo Werner can take solace from Didier Drogba’s slow start at Stamford Bridge according to journalist Oliver Young-Myles who writes for inews in the United Kingdom (UK). Just like Didier Drogba, Timo Werner has made a relatively slow start to life at Chelsea since his lucrative transfer from German Bundesliga team RB Leipzig. The Blues paid a whooping £52m to sign him from the German club and he has scored nine goals in 25 appearances but his misses in front of goal has generated more noise than the ones he scored.

Timo Werner can look up to Chelsea legend Didier Drogba, who made a slow start in West London before going on to attain legendary status at the club. Timo Werner has been tagged a flop by some Chelsea fans despite scoring eight goals in his first 20 games for the club with four of those goals coming in the Premier League but a certain Didier Drogba netted just seven goals in his first 20 Chelsea and the rest they say is history as he was able to recover from that slow start to win a lot of trophies for Chelsea, while playing a starring role. HOW SOUTHAMPTON ALMOST SIGNED DROGBA

Didier Drogba could have had a different career path if Southampton had been successful with their bid to sign the Ivorian football legend. It was revealed that the Saints tried to sign Didier Drogba while he was with Guingamp in the French league. According to The Athletic, Southampton wanted to sign Didier Drogba and FlorentMalouda while the two players were on the payroll of Guingamp. The two players would go on to play for Chelsea in the Premier League.

The publication from The Athletic revealed that Southampton’s former owner Rupert Lowe had a deal lined up for both Didier Drogba and FlorentMalouda but the Saints were not able to get the deal across the line. Didier Drogba was 25 at the time, while FlorentMalouda was 23 at the time of the interest from Southampton. Didier Drogba and FlorentMalouda were important players in the Guingamp team that was punching above its weight in the French top flight at that time. DROGBA SUPPORTS WEBO IN RACISM FIGHT

Ivorian football legend Didier Drogba has thrown his weight behind Istanbul Basaksehir assistant manager Pierre Webo who was on the receiving end of a racist comment from one of the match officials for the Champions League meeting between hosts Paris Saint Germain (PSG) and Istanbul Basaksehir at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night. Didier Drogba took to his official Twitter handle to talk about the incident that led to the Champions League game being abandoned.

According to the former Chelsea striker, the players of both PSG and Istanbul Basaksehir were right to abandon the game as a result of the incident as he thanked Pierre Webo and Demba Ba for standing out. Senegalese striker Demba Ba was the first player to take up the case with the match officials immediately after the incident. Didier Drogba spoke about it on his Twitter page earlier on Wednesday as he posted the video of the incident. He also added that the Romanian fourth official, who was guilty of the racist remark towards Webo, could have addressed the Istanbul Basaksehir coach as this guy rather than this black guy.

REECE JAMES – DROGBA WAS MY CHILDHOOD IDOL

Reece James has revealed that Didier Drogba was his childhood hero and that he was the man at Chelsea.

The Chelsea right-back has stated that his hero in football is the club legend Didier Drogba, as he was a striker before. One could be forgiven for believing that the Englishman has always been a right-back, with the young right-back being such an astute defender and efficient over-lapper; however, he has revealed now that wasn’t the case.

In an exclusive interview with “The Athletic”, James disclosed that he used to play at the opposite end of the pitch as a striker. According to James, my hero was the Ivorian. I have played as a forward, and he was at Chelsea then. Thus, I wanted and played to be like him and totally idolized him. From there, I went into central midfield until the age of 14 or 15. I had a great spell there and got used to the position. However, it got to a period I wasn’t getting playing time, and there were several midfielders in the squad, and the right-back chance was free then; that’s how I got myself there.

GIROUD MOTIVATED BY WERNER SIGNING

Chelsea’s signing RB Leipzig star Timo Werner to the club is taken as a motivation by Oliver Giroud. He says that more competition will only motivate him to play better on the pitch. Werner was signed by Chelsea after a prolonged clash between the top clubs of Europe which includes Liverpool. Lampard has discussed with the player and agreed to the transfer fee clause of £47.5 million.

WERNER WILL NEED TIME

RB Leipzig forward Yussuf Poulsen believes Timo Werner will be a great striker in the Premier League, but may need some time to adapt. The Germany international secured his move to Chelsea earlier last month and he has already left Leipzig despite the fact that they are still playing in the Champions League.

Leipzig would have preferred to keep Werner for the European campaign, but the risk of an injury meant that he was permitted to join the Blues after the Bundesliga season. In a recent interview with Sport-Informations-Dienst, Poulsen heaped praise on his former teammate and believes the marksman will make a huge impact in the Premier League.

RICHARLISON BETTER THAN THE DROG

Even though Didier Drogba is regarded as one of the Chelsea legends with goals on a regular basis, Carlo Ancelotti is often regarded as the manager who got the best out of the Ivory Coast international during his spell at Chelsea. Drogba had a reputation for being a big game player who would often scoring finals and other top matches. However, he was unable to consistently perform well in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot. All this changed in the 2009-10 campaign when Drogba finished with 29 goals and the golden boot award.

Ancelotti is back in the Premier League after stints away from England and he is in charge of Everton, who have a great talent in the form ofRicharlison. The former Watford forward became one of the marquee signings for Everton when he made the switch during the 2018-19 campaign. In his first season at Everton, the Brazilian was able to get 13 goals in 34 appearances. In the current campaign, he has managed almost a similar tally with 13 goals so far. Ancelotti, though, says that Richarlison has the potential to score a lot more and even match the likes of Drogba.

CHELSEA SHOULD SWERVE ICARDI

ESPN pundit Gabriele Marcotti has advised Chelsea to avoid the signing of Mauro Icardi from Inter Milan as he may not suit their style of play. The Argentina international is currently on a season-long loan at Paris Saint-Germain where he has bagged 20 goals in all competitions but the club are reluctant to exercise the £62m buy clause amid the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

They have sought to negotiate a lesser price for the marksman but so far, they have been unable to do so. As a result, Icardi has been fancied to return to San Siro during the summer but he could thereafter be sold to another European club, considering he is not in the plans of manager Antonio Conte.

JORGINHO STICKING AT CHELSEA

Italian midfielder Jorginho has said that he is ‘very happy’ at Chelsea and has no plans of returning to the Serie A during the summer transfer window.
